Seven artists and architects transform a decaying parking lot into an evolving play space for exploration and wonder through three projects.
Architects Daniel Green, Mark La Venture, Amber Sausen and Jessie McClurg present Pushing Light #2, a network of illuminated fabric-clad forms that envelop their surroundings and interact with visitors. As the forms morph overnight, they create an ever changing, immersive place — banishing the darkness by pushing the light.
Kaleidoscopes: Beauty from Chaos, created by artists Angela Maki Jones, Marieka Heinlen, and Sarah Honeywell of the Shiny Naughty collective, reprises the popular Naughty Shanty. Turned it into a playhouse of light, color and shadow, visitors can view their surroundings through handmade kaleidoscopes and enjoy moments of puppet theatricality.
Jess Hirsch’s Hot Pot in the City is a working hot tub with water sourced from a Saint Paul fire hydrant, treated with minerals to replicate the Blue Lagoon (Iceland), heated with timber from Minnesota, and housed in the most urban vessel possible, a dumpster. The Hot Pot will be demonstrated by Hirsch’s staff fro 9 pm – 12 midnight. The public is invited to test the waters in their own personal footbath in a bucket between 12 midnight – 5 am.
Art Shanty Projects is an artist driven temporary community exploring the ways in which relatively unregulated public spaces can be used as new and challenging artistic environments to expand notions of what art can be.
